A scientist spent 12 months measuring the impact of solar-reflective paint in L.A. He found
that ambient temperature dropped by up to 3.5\u00b0F.<\/p><\/div>

In the summer of 2022, more than 1 million of square feet of roads in L.A\u2019s Pacoima neighborhood were covered with a solar reflective coating of paint. Schoolyards, basketball courts, and parking lots were also painted, some with colorful patterns by a local artist.\u00a0As we reported back then<\/a>, the results were immediate and the paint reduced the surface temperature by about 10\u00b0 Farhenheit. A year and a half in, the results are even more compelling.<\/p><\/div>

The Cool Community Initiative, led by roofing giant GAF\u2019s social impact initiative called Community Matters, in partnership with the City of Los Angeles\u2019s Cool Streets program, has been undergoing study since it launched. Now, a\u00a0peer-reviewed study<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0Altostratus<\/a>, which also developed\u00a0California\u2019s Urban Heat Island Index<\/a>,\u00a0<\/b>found that the surface temperature reduction directly correlated to a reduction in ambient air temperature\u2014aka the temperature you\u2019d feel walking in the neighborhood.<\/p>

The neighborhood cooled by an average of 2.1\u00b0F, or up to 3.5\u00b0F during heatwaves. The coating also helped the pavement to warm more slowly before noon, and cool off faster after noon. \u201cThere are a lot of tools available to help adapt to climate change, and this is one of them\u201d says Jeff Terry, VP of corporate social responsibility and sustainability<\/p>
