The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to hear a bid from Bayer-owned Monsanto challenging thousands of lawsuits claiming its weedkiller Roundup causes cancer.<\/i><\/p>\r\n

The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to hear a bid from Bayer-owned Monsanto that aimed to challenge thousands of lawsuits claiming its weedkiller Roundup causes cancer \u2014 a potentially costly ruling, AFP\u00a0reported Tuesday<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

The high court did not explain its\u00a0decision<\/a>, which left intact a $25 million ruling in favor of a California man who alleged he developed cancer after using the\u00a0chemical<\/a>\u00a0for years.<\/p>\r\n

The decision marks a major blow to the German conglomerate\u2019s legal fight against\u00a0Roundup-related cases<\/a>, and Bayer has set aside more than $15 billion to deal with a wave of U.S.\u00a0lawsuits<\/a>\u00a0linked to the\u00a0weedkiller<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

\u201cBayer respectfully disagrees with the Supreme Court\u2019s decision,\u201d the company said in a statement.<\/p>\r\n

\u201cThe company believes that the decision undermines the ability of companies to rely on official actions taken by expert regulatory agencies,\u201d it added, referring to a\u00a02020 federal finding<\/a>\u00a0that Roundup\u2019s active ingredient is not risky.<\/p>\r\n

\u201cThis landmark decision by the Supreme Court leaves Bayer with nowhere to go \u2014 they now have to face the fact that one of their most famous products causes cancer, as well as causing widespread environmental damage.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

Bayer has been plagued by problems since it\u00a0bought Monsanto<\/a>, which owns Roundup, in 2018 for $63 billion and inherited its legal woes around the chemical\u2019s ingredient\u00a0glyphosate<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

The German firm says it has not committed any wrongdoing, and maintains that scientific studies and regulatory approvals show glyphosate is safe.<\/p>\r\n

Glyphosate is nonetheless classified as a \u201cprobable carcinogen\u201d by the International Agency for Research on Cancer at the World Health Organization (WHO).<\/p>\r\n

Billions in claims<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

However, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), on its website, says \u201cthere are no risks of concern to human health when glyphosate is used in accordance with its current label.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

In a separate court setback for Bayer, the\u00a0EPA was ordered<\/a>\u00a0to reassess the safety of glyphosate on Friday.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

The Supreme Court\u2019s decision not to intervene leaves in place Monsanto\u2019s appellate conviction in the lawsuit filed by\u00a0Edwin Hardeman<\/a>, who was diagnosed with\u00a0non-Hodgkin lymphoma<\/a>\u00a0in 2015.<\/p>\r\n

In addition to some 30,000 cases about health problems allegations against the weedkiller, Bayer\u2019s own shareholders have taken legal action as well.<\/p>\r\n
