Although acknowledging loneliness is of paramount importance, defining it accurately plays a crucial role in terms of self-awareness and coping methods. In other words, being aware of the true definition of loneliness can lead to a better understanding of the actual state of feeling, whereas an incorrect diagnosis might cause unnecessary panic, emotional crisis and despair. Having said that, loneliness has been defined in many ways in several different sources. The common definition being \u201ca state of solitude or being alone\u201d, several other definitions can be listed as \u201cinability to find meaning in one&#8217;s life\u201d, \u201cfeeling of negative and unpleasant\u201d, and \u201ca feeling of disconnectedness or isolation\u201d. It is also greatly important to recognize the reasons leading to loneliness as well as find a solution in order to deal with it. Nevertheless, the need for being alone from time to time is perfectly healthy and acceptable considering the pace of the new modern world.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong><em>What leads to loneliness?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>Some studies suggest classifying loneliness into three main categories based on its causes, such as situational loneliness, developmental loneliness, and internal loneliness.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong><em>Situational loneliness <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>and methods to cope with it<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>In this category, causes of loneliness depend on socio-economic and cultural factors. External elements that individuals experience contributes to the development of different levels of feeling lonely.<\/p>\r\n<p>People who emigrate to a completely new country tend to go through a feeling-lonely stage in their lives. Especially the ones who undergo this change without being surrounded by family or friends\u2026 It is only natural to feel all alone whilst adapting to an entirely new culture, learning new rules, apprehending people\u2019s lifestyles and mentality, etc. However, bearing in mind that things always hard before they get easier can be a good approach to go through the adaptation phase. Socializing through various kinds of activities can also be a smart action to overcome the loneliness issue in your new country. Participating in communities and\/ or group activities, volunteering, being less judgmental when meeting someone new, accepting society as it is, finding a job and hanging out with new colleagues outside of business hours, networking, and joining a gym can lead to promising results when coping with this type of situational loneliness.<\/p>\r\n<p>Another reason to feel alienated can be seen as changing jobs or starting a new school since the individual is no longer in her\/ his accustomed work\/school environment and does not communicate with the people that s\/he used to on a daily basis. In such situations, it is recommended to get to know the new colleagues\/ classmates, make an effort to be involved with group conversations, and eating with the new colleagues\/ classmates rather than sitting alone during lunch breaks.<\/p>\r\n<p>Retired people stated that they experience loneliness as well due to differences in their routines and not knowing what to do with their new everyday lives. Contacting friends and family to propose a get-together might be occasionally challenging if they are still employed. However, this does not mean that finding people who have spare time as you do is not worth considering. Another option can be engaging in a variety of new hobbies and challenging yourself to improve your skills in those brand-new areas for you.<\/p>\r\n<p>Lack of social connection while single parenting might result in loneliness too. Feeling exhausted due to the daily tasks of parenting might lead to reluctance to socialize, or you simply cannot make any time because of your workload.\u00a0 However, if the parent is not in a healthy state of mind, s\/he will be unable to raise her\/his kid in a proper way. On the other hand, individualism is critical for people in order to discover themselves, their interests, dislikes, and sometimes even their own opinions. Hence, creating a balance between isolation and social interaction should be the path that individuals follow in order to have a healthy mind and soul. Excessive exposure to human interaction or the exact opposite of that should be prevented.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong><em>Internal loneliness and solutions<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>Studies suggest that there is a compelling correlation between internal loneliness and locus of control. Locus of control is divided into two principal categories; internal locus of control, and external locus of control. People who think that their actions affect the outcome are believed to have an internal locus of control. On the other hand, individuals with an external locus of control will attribute their success to luck, fate, or circumstances. It has been demonstrated that people with an internal locus of control tend to feel less lonely since they take responsibility for their actions, and consequently, they feel like they have control over their lives. However, people with an external locus of control have a tendency to feel lonelier since they believe that whatever action they take, results will remain constant due to external factors, such as luck, fate, and circumstances. One way to solve this issue can be to make an effort towards changing your mindset if you have mostly external locus of control. Trying to take responsibility for your actions and attributing your success solely to your actions can be a great contributor to feel less lonely.<\/p>\r\n<p>Low self-esteem and low self-worth direct human beings into the direction of feeling disconnected as well. It occurs when one does not value herself\/ himself adequately, resulting in a struggle with maintaining relationships with others. But, why do human beings not see themselves as worthy? Nowadays, people try to live up to the world\u2019s expectations, meaning that they constantly seek perfectionism in their lives. They fail to base their perception of value on their very own standards. Here is where the problem begins. Failure to meet those other people\u2019s expectations creates a huge hole in our own lives, leading to low self-worth and low self-esteem. You can address this problem by starting with managing your own expectations from yourself, deciding your values on your own, and making the expectations achievable.<\/p>\r\n<p>To sum up, as it can be seen from the above that it exists a plethora of reasons why people might feel alienated, isolated, disconnected and lonely. It goes without saying that coming up with a solution is certainly possible by trying various appropriate methods.
