Nine new homes have just completed construction in cities across the United States, offering a glimpse of how homes can be green, affordable, and beautiful.<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<div id=\"fc-anyclip\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"adInserts_0\">\r\n<div class=\"ad-wrapper ad-wrapper--native_mid_article_inject\">\r\n<div class=\"ad-wrapper--ad-unit-wrap\">\r\n<div class=\"ad_unit\">\r\n<div id=\"bling-5\" data-google-query-id=\"CPK_2aPkj_ACFUn1wAodJi0Mwg\">\r\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/4160\/mv.fc\/co-design\/misc\/native_mid_article_inject_0__container__\">The homes were built as part of the U.S. Department of Energy\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solardecathlon.gov\/event\/challenges-build.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Solar Decathlon Build Challenge<\/a>, a biennial competition among university teams to design and build houses that push the limits of energy efficiency. With buildings accounting for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90599069\/want-to-actually-fix-the-environment-change-how-buildings-are-built\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">74% of national electricity consumption<\/a>, the need for better-designed homes is huge. Constructed under real-world conditions in communities near their universities, many of the nine homes are now occupied by residents. We\u2019ve got all these individual contests to get through,\u201d Granholm said. \u201cThere are new playbooks in this climate fight on energy efficiency, on renewables, on modernizing the grid, on decarbonizing the building sector, decarbonizing the transportation sector, decarbonizing the industrial sector. Their two-story, two-unit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cubouldersolardecathlon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">house<\/a>\u00a0was designed to offer an efficient and affordable alternative to the high-priced houses in the region. Accommodating the cold and snowy climate, the home managed to reduce its estimated annual utilities cost to about 10% of a conventionally built home in the area. Using equipment such as solar-tracking photovoltaic panels, an energy-recovery ventilator that reuses exhaust heat from the home\u2019s appliances, and highly efficient air conditioning through zone-based\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/energysaver\/heat-pump-systems\/ductless-mini-split-heat-pumps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ductless mini-split heat pumps<\/a>, the home generates an estimated 321 kilowatt-hours of excess electricity that is stored in on-site batteries. Designed and built by a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.solardecathlon.gov\/2020\/build\/competition-team-waterloo.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">team from the University of Waterloo<\/a>, the project is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.warriorhome.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an affordable net-zero-energy home<\/a>\u00a0designed in conjunction with the Chippewas of Nawash Indigenous community in Ontario. With a fairly straightforward rectangular footprint and classic gabled roof, the house\u2019s energy-efficiency innovations are hidden inside, where a hybrid electric water heater tank and heat pump uses electrical resistance and ambient heat to provide the home\u2019s warm water. Triple-glazed windows and an insulated concrete foundation help the home retain its own heat, using\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1c7_UrrSlGp9JSSmaIGjsY7AdHRNDeKDa\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">55% less energy<\/a>\u00a0than a conventionally designed home.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<figure class=\"wp-caption alignnone image-wrapper\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90627063\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-90627063 size-large lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/images.fastcompany.net\/image\/upload\/w_596,c_limit,q_auto:best,f_auto\/wp-cms\/uploads\/2021\/04\/12-these-prototype-homes-are-the-future-of-energy.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"295\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.fastcompany.net\/image\/upload\/w_596,c_limit,q_auto:best,f_auto\/wp-cms\/uploads\/2021\/04\/12-these-prototype-homes-are-the-future-of-energy.jpg\" \/>\r\n<p>Another angle on the University of Waterloo entry [Photo: courtesy United States Department of Energy]<\/p>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<p class=\"western\">On the other end of the climate spectrum, the competition\u2019s third-place finisher is a house in the hot and arid Southwest, designed and built by a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.solardecathlon.gov\/2020\/build\/competition-team-las-vegas.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">team from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas<\/a>. Designed specifically for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injuries,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/solar.egr.unlv.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the house<\/a>\u00a0is low on energy, while also providing an accessible floor plan and thick insulation to prevent potentially jarring outside noises from bothering the resident. Designed with PV panels and on-site battery storage systems, the home is capable of powering itself off the grid for up to three days. The process of turning their designs into built prototypes was complicated by the pandemic. Constructed by the student designers themselves as well as some volunteers from Habitat for Humanity, the homes were designed with expert input from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado.<\/p>\r\n<figure class=\"wp-caption alignnone image-wrapper\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90627059\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-90627059 size-large lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/images.fastcompany.net\/image\/upload\/w_596,c_limit,q_auto:best,f_auto\/wp-cms\/uploads\/2021\/04\/08-these-prototype-homes-are-the-future-of-energy.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"295\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.fastcompany.net\/image\/upload\/w_596,c_limit,q_auto:best,f_auto\/wp-cms\/uploads\/2021\/04\/08-these-prototype-homes-are-the-future-of-energy.jpg\" \/>\r\n<p>Another view of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, entry [Rendering: courtesy United States Department of Energy]<\/p>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<p class=\"western\">Launched by the Department of Energy in 2002, the Solar Decathlon usually brings its top-ranked designs to the National Mall in Washington, D.C., to be displayed to the public, but the pandemic necessitated some workarounds, both for the Build Challenge as well as the larger\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.solardecathlon.gov\/event\/challenges-design.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Design Challenge<\/a>, which included energy-efficient building designs from dozens of university teams. Instead of physical displays of the houses, the Decathlon has created a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.solardecathlon.gov\/virtual_village\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">virtual tour<\/a>\u00a0that allows users to view photos, videos, and 360-degree tours of the insides and outsides of the structures. Tests show their energy performance compared to conventionally designed homes, and some have been able to achieve savings that represent thousands of dollars off residents\u2019 utility bills.<\/p>\r\n<figure class=\"wp-caption alignnone image-wrapper\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90627064\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-90627064 size-large lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/images.fastcompany.net\/image\/upload\/w_596,c_limit,q_auto:best,f_auto\/wp-cms\/uploads\/2021\/04\/13-these-prototype-homes-are-the-future-of-energy.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"350\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.fastcompany.net\/image\/upload\/w_596,c_limit,q_auto:best,f_auto\/wp-cms\/uploads\/2021\/04\/13-these-prototype-homes-are-the-future-of-energy.jpg\" \/>\r\n<p>Weber State University\u2019s entry [Photo: courtesy United States Department of Energy]<\/p>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<p class=\"western\">The results are impressive and hint at a near future when buildings represent a much smaller chunk of the world\u2019s energy use and carbon footprint. The Solar Decathlon competition is a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/articles\/solar-decathlon-technology-innovation-series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">testing ground for the new approaches and technologies<\/a>\u00a0that can help the broader design and construction industry improve the energy efficiency and environmental sustainability of buildings.
